What makes Girls Inc. of Pinellas special?
No other organization in Pinellas County focuses on providing high-level academic enrichment activities aimed at giving your daughter the skills necessary to be successful in an increasingly demanding school environment.
Our curriculum includes STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, literacy, creative arts, healthy living/life skills, and, of course, girl related societal subjects; such as teen pregnancy and delinquency.
Girls Inc. gives girls the opportunity to enhance their skills by providing experiential, hands-on activities, giving them leadership roles, help them learn about healthier living, and allowing them to explore in the safety of all-girl space. This opportunity allows girls to take risks, make mistakes, learn to think critically, and be successful without competition or distraction from boys, and without having to “meet the mark” of the current education system. Rather, girls are encouraged to see and test out the possibilities of their futures while having fun exploring the present.
Statistics indicate that when given the opportunity, girls perform equal to or better than their male counterparts in STEM subjects. However, girls are generally not afforded the same level of opportunity in school, in fact, if girls are not provided the opportunity to explore the STEM subjects by 7th grade, the likelihood of their choosing this direction of education or employment is significantly diminished.
Girls Inc. provides that opportunity with enjoyable, engaging and challenging activities in all STEM areas, including chemistry, biology, marine science, engineering, aerospace and much more. Math is critical to the full development of any child because it provides the foundation for critical thinking and problem solving.
Girls Inc. provides entertaining and targeted math activities to encourage girls to take a risk, step outside themselves and learn the critical thinking skills so necessary to becoming a well-rounded adult.
Literacy is important because it is the foundation for all other learning. If girls cannot read to proficiency by 3rd grade, their chances of success in upper education and employment are greatly diminished.
We have adopted Readers Theater, serving K-8, which provides an excellent platform for accomplishing both proficiency and engagement. Each grade level offers a multitude of age-appropriate stories that address all reading abilities.
Reading develops the confidence necessary to be successful in other subjects where reading skill is critical.
Every girl has to be nutritionally fulfilled if she is to reach her full academic potential, which is why Girls Inc. provides healthy, hot meals on a daily basis.
Girls need to clearly understand what it takes to develop and live a healthy life style. Therefore we partner with several organizations to work with the girls to develop a fully-functional organic garden, teach the girls and parents about affordable healthy cooking, and put them on a path to a healthy, self-sustained lifestyle.
All of these healthy living and life skills programs are designed to equip your daughter with the foundations to be successful in life, both academically and personally.
A well-rounded program cannot only focus on academics, but must allow the creative spirit and energy to find root and blossom. Our creative arts program offers girls expression through dance and music, theater and fine arts.
Theater lets girls find their creative, joyful spirit through personal interpretation and expression.
Dance allows girls to have fun; fun without criticism or being concerned with how they look, how ‘good’ they dance, or without having to perform for approval.
Fine arts activate the right side of the brain, that creative energy, which not only enriches their lives, but increases their academic abilities.
Creative Arts provide a gentle balance to more academic subjects, and a release for day-to-day stress!
